Racism
An Antillean woman is married to a white man. He insults her family and her race by identifying them with apes. He hates everything that is not white, but meanwhile he loves his black wife deeply. The problem is that she gets disappointed in him because her family treats him with much love and care. She stays with him in the hope that he will get to his senses eventually.
A Hindustani woman is married to a white man who is very loving and caring. She loves him, but has a racist attitude towards his family and race. She and her whole family treat him like dirt under their feet. He is not allowed to come to parties because they feel ashamed for him. The family is nagging at the lovers and wonder if she could not find herself someone from her own culture.
Racism arises from disdain for the differentness of the other, which is accompanied by fear for the unknown. The determining causes of racism are fear for neglect, a denial of itself, and the desire to be superior. Life is being seen as a race, whereby only the strong people will survive. People are afraid to be dominated, that an other ‘sort’ will gain more control so that the latter can penetrate into society, at cost of the own ‘sort’. Racism appears even within the same religion, culture and group and is embedded in the human mind- set. Racism is like an ill- natured tumour, which is extending contagiously. This is due to the environment which is stimulating to think differently. The ‘we- feeling’ against the ‘they- feeling’ is being emphasized because the human being has a desire to conform itself with a certain group. As such, certain expressions in the social environment can have both an obstructive and discouraging impact on the mental condition, which can result in serious frictions. Racism is an obstacle to gain the maximum productivity per capita. It is disastrous for our society. Moreover, the international competitive position is weakened because of the negative image the country gets. To be international successful as a country, there needs to be a high cohesion between the different races in the multicultural society. Tolerance and love are positive emotions which have an appealing force of attraction for the environment, especially for the neighbouring countries. This will lead to more tourism and thus bring in more money, a stimulation for the economy.
